Breathwork + Massage: Helping Your Nervous System Exhale
At Muscles & Mind, massage isn’t just about loosening knots—it’s about helping your body feel safe enough to let go. One of the most powerful tools I use to support that shift is something we all have access to: the breath.
Why Breath Matters
The way we breathe tells the body a story. Shallow chest breathing? That’s the nervous system bracing for impact. Slow, deep nasal breathing? That signals safety—and allows us to soften.
When someone comes in holding tension in their jaw, ribs, or pelvic floor, it’s rarely just about “tight muscles.” Breathwork gives us a way to help the nervous system settle while we work on the body—and when the system feels safe, everything else follows.
What the Research Says
We know from studies that slow, diaphragmatic breathing can:
Lower blood pressure and heart rate
Ease muscle tension and improve oxygen flow
Activate the vagus nerve, helping regulate emotions and pain
Support the parasympathetic “rest and restore” response
That’s not just helpful in theory—it’s essential when you’re on the table trying to release years of stored tension. Massage works best when the body feels safe enough to soften. Breathwork helps us get there, gently.
How It Looks in a Session
I don’t use strict breathing “protocols” unless it’s helpful for you. Sometimes it’s as simple as cueing a soft nasal inhale or slowing the exhale. Other times we’ll focus on areas where the breath feels stuck—like tight ribs or an unmoving diaphragm—and explore release with gentle manual work.
This isn’t performance breathing. It’s real, responsive, and built around what you need on the day.
Why I Blend the Two
Because body and mind are never separate. Because tension is rarely just physical. Because when breath and body align, healing becomes more than just relief—it becomes regulation, awareness, and long-term change.
